LET'S TALK

ABOUT SEX,

BABY.

the birds and the bees, hooking-up, afternoon delight, or whatever other euphemism you may come up with, sex is an integral part of the human experience. as such, sexual rights are universal human rights based on the inherent freedom, dignity, and equality of all human beings. seems simple enough, right?

well, think again.

in reality, sex is a lot more complicated than just two bodies naked on top of each other. instead, sex is a complex and deeply personal experience that is shaped by the interaction between the individual and competing social structures.

THE BIRDS

& THE BEES

SEXUALITY AS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT

in other words, sex norms and sexuality are both socially determined. our beliefs and attitudes toward sex vary in expression across culture, time, and place. further, societal-level considerations of cultural, economic, and political factors are responsible for shaping the ways in which we understand our own sexual agency.

WHY THIS MATTERS

society, with its fetish for hetero-normativity, has told us how we should behave in the bedroom.

mainstream media, education, and porn have socialized us to believe sex = penis + vagina.

while penetration is how men most reliably achieve orgasm, women don't typically orgasm this way.

thus, by denying women the pleasure their body is capable of, sex is another way in which the patriarchy is established.

the focus on penetration has left women's most reliable route to orgasm, clitoral stimulation, absent from contemporary depictions of sex creating pleasure inequalities between men and women.

THE CLITORIS

INTERNALANATOMY

DID YOU KNOW?

the clitoris contains 8,000 nerve endings; twice the amount of that of a penis!

the clitoris and the penis have the same anatomical structures just assembled in different ways!

the clitoris is the only organ in the human body whose sole purpose is for pleasure!

THANKS, SEX ED

pleasure inequalities between men and women can largely be attributed to the general lack of knowledge surrounding female sexual pleasure.

sex education has failed us by focusing entirely on teaching about the female genitalia in terms of its internal anatomy, while completely ignoring the organ whose sole purpose is for female pleasure—the clitoris.

WE LANDED ON THE MOON

A FULL 29 YEARS BEFORE FULLY UNDERSTANDING THE

ANATOMY OF THE CLITORIS.

yup, you read that right.

CLITS, CLITS,

& MORE CLITS

KEEPING THE CLITORIS INVISIBLE IN SEX ED DISCOURSE IS NO SMALL OMISSION

in fact, between 70-95% of women require direct clitoral stimulation to reach an orgasm.

one study found that over 60% of college students falsely believe the clitoris is located inside the vaginal canal.

UMM, WHAT?

the same study discovered that students also mistakenly believe that women orgasm from penetration alone.

YIKES.

in reality, the study found that only about 15-30% of women orgasm from intercourse alone.

OKURRR.

HOW CAN WE EXPECT A WOMAN TO ORGASM WHEN SHE HERSELF DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT THE ORGAN WHOSE PRIMARY PURPOSE IS FOR PLEASURE?

by failing to teach about female pleasure, we leave people to rely on other sources, like the sexual degrading industry of porn, to fill in the gap of what is to be expected in sexual relationships.

this again fosters a culture that focuses entirely on male pleasure while further reinforcing gendered stereotypes.
